Mission: Fight Malaria Challenge 2016

GSK’s legacy of fighting malaria stretches back more than a century and we've recently teamed up with Comic Relief to combat the disease in a country-wide schools challenge. We received brilliant entries from across the UK and have shortlisted these down to to six fantastic finalists. We can't wait to see them for the final at the Science Museum on 29 November! Read on to find out more about what they had to do...

Your mission, should you choose to accept it …

Your students must form a special task force and devise ways to free the world from malaria forever.

Why take part?

Malaria still claims nearly 500,000 lives every year. Our Challenge brings this important real-world issue to life in the classroom with thought-provoking content linked to the UK science curricula.

We asked students to come up with ideas and innovative solutions that could help to eradicate this disease. Students will need to select one of four topic areas to focus on: Bed Nets, Education, New Technologies or Mosquito Breeding Grounds.  Developed with teachers, the Challenge encourages students to use investigative, practical problem-solving and teamworking skills.

Fantastic prizes and a place in the final at the Science Museum in November 2016!

  • Winning team will be part of GSK stand at the Big Bang Fair 2017!
  • £1500 worth of vouchers for the winning school plus runners-up prizes!
  • Top three teams will visit a GSK site in the UK and get a tour of the facilities!
  • Trophies, giveaways and goodie bags!

Join in!

Even though entries have closed for the Challenge this year, you can still use the resources to teach your students about the fight against malaria. Use the film above to introduce the topic to your students and download the Challenge resources. Teacher and student Challenge packs contain fact sheets to help develop ideas and suggest hands-on practical investigations.  You'll also find posters and a student-facing presentation.

Good luck!
